A "Running" bamboo - If you are looking for a fast growing natural privacy screen that stays green all year round - this is your plant!
Psuedosasa japonica 'Arrow'
Description: Arrow bamboo, one of the best 'running' bamboos for privacy screens. It averages 12 to 15 feet in height and has leaves all the way to the ground. It has a tropical look with leaves somewhat larger than the average bamboo and a lush, green color. A screen only a couple of feet thick will usually block the view completely. Culms were once used for making arrows, hence the name, Arrow Bamboo.
Landscape use: This plant is widely used as a garden ornamental. This bamboo also makes a wonderful container plant. Culms make excellent garden stakes! This bamboo is not a 'clumping' variety, as it will tend to spread out. So either plan to let it go if you have a large yard and mow it when it wanders out of it's grove, or use a rhizome barrier to contain it to a specific area.
Native Habitat: Japan.
Size: Can grow more than 15 feet. Culms are usually about 1/2 inch in diameter.
Cold hardiness: Root-hardy to about 0 degrees F. Leaves start to drop at about 15 degrees F and culms are killed to the ground if temperatures go much below 10 degrees F. Best adapted to Zone 8.
Culture: Plant in full sun or shade. Full sun will encourage more of a dense growth habit. This bamboo was originally grown to make arrows, hence the name, arrow bamboo!

This bamboo is not a 'clumping' variety, as it will tend to spread out, although it is a slow runner and will tend to clump in direct sunlight.
Cold hardiness: Root-hardy to about -5 degrees F. Leaves start to drop at about 15 degrees F and culms are killed to the ground if temperatures go much below 10 degrees F. Best adapted to Zone 8.
Culture: Plant in full sun or shade. Full sun will encourage more of a dense growth habit.
