Black Bamboo Phyllostachys nigra 'Hale' var.
Description: A beautiful choice ornimental with small green leaves contrasting strikingly with the jet-black culms. Black bamboo is one of the more popular and desirable of the ornamental bamboos. Although a running bamboo, its beauty and mystique is well worth any efforts required to keep it contained (yearly pruning), whether that be in a landscape setting or in containers on the patio! New canes emerge green and turn black within a year. Plant prefers light shade.
Native Habitat: China and Japan. Root-hardy to about 0 degrees F.
Size: Hale variations can grow to 20 feet and is a smaller, more cold tolerant variant of the prinicpal form. Culms are usually about 1.5 inchs in diameter and are strikingly attractive.
Fishing Pole Bamboo - Phyllostachys aurea
Description: When a dense screen close to the ground is needed, this bamboo can be very effective, since the density of nodes on the lower portion of the culms also means a greater density of branches. This bamboo is heat, cold and drought tolerant, and it does well in a container and as a hedge. New canes emerge green and turn golden within a year. Plant prefers full sun.
Native Habitat: Root-hardy to about 0 degrees F.
Size: Maximum height is 27 ft. Culms are usually about 1.75 inchs in diameter..
Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo - Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Madake'
Description: This bamboo is one of the true giant tree grasses. Individual culms are among the longest lived, producing new leafy twigs each year for two decades or more. Young plants have long, prominant lower branches, but mature plants are free of branches on the lower nodes. Prefers full sun.
Native Habitat: China and Japan. Root-hardy to about 5 degrees F.
Size: Maximum height of 72 ft. Culm diameter 6 inches.
